You can't see any such thing.

Making an Interactive fiction game

Remember those old text-based games known as Interactive fiction? Where you type commands to move characters around and make them interact with their environment. This was very popular in the 80s after the release of "Zork" series, and "the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy".

It seems that the games market is saturated already. with 652,378 currently available on app store alone. most of which are one-tap time wasters or 3D world featuring super complicated graphics. You can rarely find something that is both fun to play and has a meaningful goal...

A mini-project idea

I am planning to create an interactive fiction (aka: text adventure) with a non-linear branching narrative allowing freedom of choice i.e. different choices lead to different endings, it should have a philosophical depth where the objective isn't the highest score but rather the outcome of choices users make along the way.
Some of the old interactive fictions are frustrating to play due to their limited language parsing, you might need to type very specific instructions to proceed, often non-intuitive ones such as "examine mailbox" or "inventory". So I was thinking why not include an autocomplete textbox or a list of alternative commands that shows up when your command isn't recognized.

It'll be a long term project, if you want to brainstorm with me, leave your comments below.. All suggestions are welcome.

Why interactive fiction?

-It is intuitive, and people are familiar with similar type of games such as visual novels*.They only differ in the user interface: picture instead of text, and interaction: buttons instead of line commands.

-playing text adventure is like reading a novel, where you can control the plot and the ending, this multitude in possibilities is typical to sandbox games** such as "the sims" or survival genre like "the long dark"

-Despite their lack of graphics, text adventures include a physical dimension, your imagination is the playground; you explore the environment, move characters, solve mazes, all in your head.. Playing a video game on the other hand is like watching a movie where you're limited by the director's perspectives and the actor's personalities.

-Text games are generally easier to implement and require less processing power than games with graphics.

Where can you play text adventure games?

They are available on textadventures.co.uk, it's a community of interactive fiction makers and players.

Visual novel*: is an interactive game, featuring mostly static graphics, most often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills (and sometimes video footage).

Sandbox game**: a game wherein the player is given the ability to choose what, when, and how they want to approach the available choices in content. The term is in reference to a child's sandbox in which no rules are present and play is derived from open-ended choice.

Behind the title: While playing Zork, "You can't see any such thing" is a frustrating sentence that prompts you to input a different command everytime you ask for an object that is not in your surroundings.
